Mauritius: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Mauritius Travel Guide – Everything You Need to Know About This Tropical Paradise

If you’ve ever dreamed of crystal-clear lagoons, soft white beaches, lush green mountains and a mix of cultures unlike anywhere else — Mauritius is that dream come true.

This small island nation in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, is often described as one of the most beautiful islands in the world. But there’s much more to it than just beaches.

Mauritius has a fascinating history shaped by Dutch, French, British and Indian influences, a vibrant Creole culture, and some of the friendliest locals you’ll ever meet. In this guide, we’ll take you through everything worth seeing and doing — from Le Morne Brabant and the Seven Colored Earths of Chamarel, to local food, Hindu temples, and the best beaches to relax on.

In this travel guide to Mauritius, we’ll also share our personal experiences from traveling across the island — where we stayed, what to eat, and tips to make your visit unforgettable.

If you are looking to combine your trip with even more dramatic volcanic landscapes and world-class hiking, we highly recommend island hopping to nearby La Réunion, which we visited right after Mauritius

Grand Baie – The Perfect Northern Base

Our journey started in Grand Baie, in the north — a lively coastal area filled with restaurants, beaches, and local life.

We stayed at Ki Residences, a spacious apartment complex with a large pool — ideal for families or long stays.

💡 Tip: Renting an apartment instead of a hotel is often cheaper and gives you more freedom to explore.

From here, you can easily visit nearby beaches, markets, and learn about the dodo, the iconic extinct bird that once lived on Mauritius.

Le Morne Brabant – Symbol of Freedom

In the South West, the scenery changes dramatically. The mighty Le Morne Brabant mountain rises above turquoise lagoons and white sand beaches.

It’s not just beautiful — it’s deeply symbolic. During the era of slavery, many escaped slaves found refuge in its caves. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island’s most photographed landmarks.

From the air, you can even spot the famous “underwater waterfall illusion”, where ocean currents create the optical illusion of a cascading drop-off — one of the most unique natural sights in the world.

Black River Gorges & Chamarel Seven Colored Earths

Nature lovers shouldn’t miss Black River Gorges National Park, a lush, mountainous area perfect for hiking and scenic drives.

Nearby you’ll find the Chamarel Waterfall, the tallest on the island (100 meters), and the surreal Seven Colored Earth Geopark, where volcanic sands shimmer in shades of red, purple, and yellow. You can book your trip here* or rent a cheap car to explore the island by yourself!

🐢 You can also meet giant tortoises here — descendants of the species that once roamed Mauritius before extinction.

Ganga Talao – The Sacred Lake

Deep in the highlands lies Ganga Talao (also known as Grand Bassin), a holy site for the island’s large Hindu community.

According to legend, Lord Shiva spilled water from the sacred Ganges River here, forming the lake.
It’s surrounded by temples, colorful statues, and a 33-meter-tall Shiva statue — an impressive sight even for non-religious visitors.

The Flavors of Mauritius

Mauritian cuisine is a reflection of its diverse culture — a blend of Indian, Creole, Chinese, and French influences. Expect flavorful curries, street food like roti and dholl puri, and the freshest seafood. We were lucky to have a private chef prepare a traditional dinner for us — one of the best meals of our trip.

Pointe aux Biches & Flic en Flac Beach

Our next stop was Pointe aux Biches, where we stayed in Plage Bleue Apartments, right on the beach. From there, we explored the island’s west coast, including Flic en Flac Beach — a long stretch of golden sand surrounded by volcanic peaks.
It’s one of the best places to swim, relax, and enjoy local life. The best part? It’s completely free and open to everyone.
