Safari in Etosha National Park - Namibia

Etosha Safari Guide: Wildlife & Travel Tips

Experience Africa's Premier Wildlife Destination

Road trip Namibia Sossusvlei

Etosha National Park stands as one of Africa’s most spectacular safari destinations, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to witness the continent’s incredible wildlife in their natural habitat. Located in northern Namibia, this expansive park covers over 22,000 square kilometers and is renowned for its diverse ecosystem and abundant animal populations.

Specifically, Etosha is characterized by its vast salt pan, visible even from space, which attracts thousands of animals during the dry season. The park is home to four of Africa’s Big Five (excluding buffalo), including elephants, lions, leopards, and the critically endangered black rhino. You can expect to see giraffes, zebras, springbok, oryx, and over 340 bird species!

Safari in Etosha: Self-drive or guided tour?

The park features numerous waterholes, making it ideal for self-drive safaris. During the dry season (May to October), animals congregate around these water sources, providing exceptional viewing opportunities. Unlike many African parks, Etosha allows visitors to explore independently in their own vehicles, making it perfect for campervan adventures and budget-conscious travelers.
If you prefer to go on a guided tour safari in Etosha, we highly recommend to check out this website. You can compare a lot of different companies and tour packages here.

Planning Your Visit to Etosha

Best Time to Visit: May through October offers optimal wildlife viewing as animals gather at waterholes. Conversely, the wet season (November to April) brings migratory birds and lush landscapes.

Accommodation Options: The park offers three main rest camps (Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni) with camping facilities, bungalows, and restaurants. Booking in advance is essential, especially during peak season. Keep in mind that just outside the National Park, there are a lot of accommodations to stay.

Getting There: Etosha is accessible via the town of Outjo (approximately 110km south of the park) or as part of a northern Namibia road trip circuit.

Which places you should visit in Namibia

Etosha National Park pairs perfectly with other Namibian highlights including Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, and the Skeleton Coast. Beyond Namibia, many travelers continue their journey to neighboring Botswana’s Okavango Delta or Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, creating an unforgettable Southern African adventure.

Essential Safari in Etosha Tips

To ensure a successful experience, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Start game drives early in the morning or late afternoon when animals are most active
  • Bring binoculars and a good camera with zoom lens to properly observe distant wild life
  • Pack sufficient water and snacks, as distances between camps are substantial
  • Respect park rules: stay in your vehicle except at designated areas
