The hidden gem of Brazil: Lençóis Maranhenses

Lençóis Maranhenses, a desert with thousand lagoons

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park stands as one of Brazil’s most extraordinary natural phenomena, located in the stunning Northern region of the country. This remarkable landscape earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2024, and it’s easy to understand why. Nowhere else on Earth will you find such a surreal combination of pristine white sand dunes stretching to the horizon, punctuated by thousands of crystal-clear, turquoise lagoons formed in perfect half-moon shapes.

The ecosystem of Lençóis Maranhenses is utterly unique. During and after the rainy season, rainfall creates a natural swimming paradise as fresh water collects in the valleys between the dunes, forming these incredible lagoons that seem almost too beautiful to be real.

A New UNESCO World Heritage Site

In July 2024, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park was officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This prestigious status recognizes the park as a globally unique ecosystem. For travelers in 2026, this means stricter regulations to preserve the pristine white dunes and crystal-clear lagoons. It’s more important than ever to visit with licensed guides and respect the natural boundaries of this fragile paradise. Being here feels like walking on another planet that is now, quite rightly, protected for future generations.

Best time to visit Lençóis Maranhenses

The best time to visit Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is between May and September. During these months, the rainy season has ended, and the lagoons between the white sand dunes are at their fullest and most crystal-clear. By October, many lagoons begin to evaporate, so timing is crucial for the best experience.

How to visit Lençóis Maranhenses

Our adventure began with thrilling 4×4 expeditions across the dunes to reach legendary spots like Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita. We witnessed breathtaking sunsets that painted the entire desert golden, explored the pristine coastline, and visited the charming fishing village of Atins. The highlight was dining at the world-famous Sr. Antonio’s restaurant, where we savored their legendary grilled shrimp while watching the sun set over this desert paradise.

Where to stay: Barreirinhas or Atins?

When planning your trip, the biggest choice is where to base yourself. We chose to stay in Barreirinhas, the main gateway to the park. It offers a wide range of hotels, restaurants, and easy access to the most famous lagoons like Lagoa Azul. While we used Barreirinhas as our hub, our 4×4 tours also took us through Atins, a charming, sandy fishing village closer to the coast. Atins is much smaller and has a more remote, ‘barefoot luxury’ vibe with boutique stay options. If you want convenience and variety, stay in Barreirinhas; if you want to get off the grid, consider spending a few nights in Atins.
