Hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge in China

Hiking the Tiger Leaping Gorge: The Ultimate Guide to China’s Grand Canyon (2026)

During our travels through the heart of China, we tackled one of the most spectacular treks on the planet: the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Located in Shangri-La County, this natural wonder is an absolute must-do for backpackers and adventure seekers visiting the Yunnan province.

The Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest canyons in the world, with a maximum depth of approximately 3,790 meters (12,434 feet) from river to mountain peak. It’s no wonder they call it the Grand Canyon of China. In this guide, I’ll share our two-day adventure and all the updated 2026 info you need to hike it yourself.

The Legend of the Tiger

Legend has it that a tiger once escaped a hunter by leaping across the narrowest point of the gorge (about 25 meters wide), landing on a large rock in the middle of the Jinsha River. Today, that spot is a major landmark, but for hikers, the real magic lies high above the roaring water.

Choosing Your Route: High Trail vs. Low Trail

  • The Low Trail: This is a paved road used by tour buses. It takes you close to the water but misses the epic scale of the canyon.

  • The High Trail (Recommended): This is the legendary hiking path. It winds along the cliffs of the Haba Snow Mountain, offering constant views of the jagged peaks of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain across the river.

Day 1: Conquering the '28 Bends'

The first day is the toughest. The most famous challenge is the 28 Bends—a series of steep switchbacks that will test your legs and lungs. It’s a grueling climb, but once you reach the top, the panoramic view of the river winding thousands of meters below makes every drop of sweat worth it.

Day 2: Waterfalls and the 'Sky Ladder'

On the second day, the path levels out somewhat but remains exciting. You’ll walk past vertical drops and under waterfalls that spill right over the trail. The ultimate adrenaline rush? The Tianditi (Sky Ladder)—a vertical iron ladder bolted into the cliffside. It’s the shortcut back up to the main road, but definitely not for those with a fear of heights!

Practical Tips & Info (Updated for 2026)

  • 2026 Entrance Fee: As of early 2026, the entrance fee is 55 CNY (approx. €7 / $7.50).

  • The “Local” Fees: Be aware that local villagers have built and maintained certain shortcuts, bridges, and the Sky Ladder. They often ask for a small “toll” (usually 10-15 CNY). It’s best to carry small change in cash for this.

  • Best Time to Visit: May, June, September, and October are ideal. Avoid July and August if possible, as the rainy season can make the High Trail slippery and prone to landslides.

  • Luggage Hack: Don’t carry your full backpack! Most hikers leave their main luggage at Jane’s Guesthouse (at the start) or their hostel in Lijiang and hike with just a small daypack.

  • Accommodation: We highly recommend staying at the Halfway House. Their “Tea Horse” terrace offers one of the most iconic views in China—perfect for a post-hike beer. In 2026, a private room costs around 200-300 CNY.
