This is the travel guide to Langkawi. The island of Langkawi is a paradise with a tropical rainforest full of monkeys, tropical birds, reptiles and natural wonders. From Penang we take an airplane to Langkawi. In 30 minutes you arrive in this amazing paradise!
✈️ Flying to Langkawi
We took a short flight from Penang to Langkawi — just 30 minutes in the air! As soon as we landed, the island’s calm and tropical vibe hit us right away. Our first stop was Holiday Villa Beach Resort, located on the southern tip of the island. It’s surrounded by gardens and offers incredible ocean views — the ideal base for your first days in Langkawi.
From above, the island looks like a green gem floating in the Andaman Sea, with dozens of smaller islands scattered around. In total, the Langkawi archipelago consists of 99 islands, most of which are uninhabited. Pure paradise!
🚗 Exploring Langkawi by Car
To really explore Langkawi, we recommend renting a car. It’s super affordable — around $25 USD per day — and gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace. The roads are quiet and easy to drive, much more relaxed than Bali or Thailand.
One of the highlights you simply can’t miss is Kilim Geoforest Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This mangrove forest, with towering limestone cliffs that are over 500 million years old, feels like another world. We rented a small boat for a private two-hour tour through the mangroves, caves, and rivers — and it was worth every penny.
🦇 Mangroves, Caves & Eagles
Our first stop was Bat Cave, filled with hundreds of sleeping bats hanging above us. Next came Crocodile Cave, named for its crocodile-shaped entrance (don’t worry — no real crocs here!). We continued to a floating fish farm, where we learned about local aquaculture and watched huge sea bass being fed.
But the real highlight? Watching hundreds of majestic eagles swoop down over the water. This is one of the few places in the world where you can see so many eagles up close. It’s breathtaking.
🏖️ Best Beaches in Langkawi
Langkawi is known for its beautiful and uncrowded beaches. We explored two of the best ones:
Pantai Pasir Tengkorak (Sandy Skulls Beach): Despite the spooky name, it’s an absolutely stunning and peaceful beach surrounded by jungle and palm trees. Perfect for those looking for a quiet spot to relax.
Pantai Cenang Beach: The island’s most popular beach, perfect for swimming, beach bars, and sunset walks. It’s lively, yet still has that laid-back island charm.
🐒 Jungle Luxury at Berjaya Langkawi Resort
For our last few nights in Langkawi – Malaysia, we checked into the Berjaya Langkawi Resort, one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. The villas are built on stilts in the middle of the jungle and above the turquoise sea — pure tropical bliss.
From our balcony, we spotted families of spectacled langurs, playful macaques, and colorful hornbills flying by. Between jungle walks and dips in the infinity pool, it was hard to imagine leaving this paradise behind.
Travel Tips for Langkawi
Getting there: Daily flights from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Singapore.
Getting around: Rent a car or scooter to explore freely.
Best time to visit: November to April (dry season).
Don’t miss: Kilim Geoforest Park, Pantai Cenang Beach, and the Langkawi Sky Bridge.
