Zanzibar - Africa's Most Beautiful Island

Getting to Zanzibar

We flew into Zanzibar from Ethiopia and immediately fell in love with this African paradise. Although Zanzibar is a relatively small island at only 2,700 square kilometers, it still packs an incredible punch when it comes to natural beauty, culture, and history. Therefore, planning the right Zanzibar accommodation is crucial for your experience.

Where to Stay in Zanzibar

Instead of staying in the touristy areas, we chose to be “in the middle of nowhere” at the Bella Vista Resort in Kisimkazi, a town in the remote southwest of the island. This turned out to be one of our best decisions!

Why We Chose Kisimkazi:

First and foremost, we loved the authentic atmosphere. Our stay offered:

  • A beautiful garden resort complete with a swimming pool.

  • Furthermore, stunning ocean views where local fishermen work daily.

  • A truly Authentic African atmosphere.

  • It’s close to Dongwe Beach—consequently, it’s perfect for experiencing local life.

  • Crucially, it was away from the crowds but still accessible.

In summary, the resort provided everything we needed: comfortable accommodation, beautiful surroundings, and most importantly, a genuine taste of Zanzibar life.

The History and Culture of Zanzibar

Before starting your Zanzibar adventure, it’s worthwhile to grasp its fascinating and complex history:

    • Colonial Past: Initially, the island was colonized by the Portuguese starting in the 16th century, then the Arabs, and finally the British.

    • Brief Independence: Afterward, when colonial rule ended, Zanzibar was, for a short period, an independent country.

    • Modern Day: Today, the island officially belongs to Tanzania.

    • Population: It has about 1 million inhabitants, whereby 99% of the population is Muslim.

    • Culture: Consequently, the culture is a beautiful blend of African, Arab, and European influences.

Exploring Zanzibar: Our Road Trip Experience

To really explore the island and make the most of this Complete travel guide Tanzania and Zanzibar, we highly recommend renting a car. This is because having your own transportation allows you to:

  • Visit beaches during non-peak hours.

  • In addition, discover hidden spots between the popular destinations.

  • Essentially, stop wherever and whenever you want.

  • Most importantly, experience the island at your own pace.

  •

Which Zanzibar Beach is Best for You? (Our Top 5)

East Coast Beaches

Jambiani Beach

Our first stop on the east coast was Jambiani, a local spot with incredible character. What you’ll find here:

  • Kids playing on the beach
  • Furthermore, boutique hotels with authentic charm
  • Excellent kitesurfing conditions due to consistent wind
  • Overall, a local atmosphere mixed with tourist facilities

Paje Beach

Driving north from Jambiani, we reached Paje – and this might just be our favorite beach on the entire island. Here’s why Paje is special:

  • Crystal-clear, incredibly blue water
  • Also, the widest white sand beaches you’ve ever seen
  • Paradise for kitesurfers
  • Moreover, beach bars with relaxed vibes
  • Water stays shallow for hundreds of meters – thus, it’s perfect for families
Zanzibar Paje Beach
North Coast: Nungwi Beach

After driving about 80 kilometers north (approximately 1.5 hours from our resort), we reached the most northern tip of Zanzibar: Nungwi Beach.

Why Nungwi Beach is Special:

  • One of the most beautiful beaches in all of Africa
  • Moreover, it offers wider sand and different beach shape than the east coast
  • More luxurious hotels and resorts
  • Furthermore, it’s popular with honeymooners
  • The beach wraps around the northern tip of the island

Practical Tip for Nungwi:
Parking can be challenging, due to all the local activity. We asked the Hilton if we could park there in exchange for having drinks or lunch, and they gladly agreed. Many hotels will offer this arrangement.

Kendwa Beach

Just 15 minutes south of Nungwi, we discovered Kendwa Beach. The best part? We could drive right onto the beach! Imagine parking your car on pristine white sand, rolling over twice, and hitting the stunning blue water. From above with a drone, you can see incredible sandbanks and patterns in the water – it’s absolutely stunning.

The north coast is more developed than the south, with more luxurious hotels and infrastructure. However, take just two steps outside any hotel and you’re immediately back in authentic local life – that’s the beauty of Zanzibar.

South Coast: Matenda Beach

The South Coast offers something completely different from the north and east – dramatic giant rocks mixed with perfect little beaches and the bluest water imaginable.

Matenda Beach and Eden Rock
Hidden between baobab trees, this remote beach features:

  • Enormous rock formations creating dramatic scenery
  • Perfect little coves for swimming
  • Fewer tourists (especially if you arrive early)
  • Excellent photo opportunities
  •

Pro Tip: With a rental car, you can arrive early in the morning before tour groups show up. When we were leaving, crowds were just arriving – perfect timing!

Jozani Forest: Spot Unique Monkeys

While driving north from the south coast, you’ll cross through Jozani Forest – home to monkeys that only live on Zanzibar! In fact, we spotted them hopping through the trees while driving, which was an unexpected and delightful surprise.

Stone Town: Unesco World Heritage Site

To complete your visit to Zanzibar, a visit to Stone Town, the old quarter of Zanzibar City, is a must. This entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with fascinating and often heartbreaking history.

Historical Significance:

  • Arabs traded not only spices here but also slaves
  • Today, the town symbolizes the fight against slavery
  • Beautiful blend of African, Arab, and European architecture

Must-Visit: Freddie Mercury’s Birthplace
One building you absolutely cannot skip is the former house of Farrokh Bulsara – better known as Freddie Mercury, the legendary Queen frontman. Standing in front of his birthplace is a surreal moment for any music fan!

Practical Information for Zanzibar

Best Drink on the Island: Try Stoney Tangawizi – an African ginger beer that’s better than Coke! Indeed, if you don’t want to drink beer all day in the heat, this is the perfect alternative.

Getting Around:

  • Rent a car for maximum flexibility (about $40-60 per day)
  • Taxis are available but limit your spontaneity
  • Many hotels offer tours, but you’ll visit places during peak times

Budget tips:

  • Accommodation at Bella Vista Resort: Very reasonable for the quality
  • National Marine Aquarium: Would be a good addition if you have kids
  • Meals: Affordable, especially at local spots

Safaris in Tanzania

After a lot of beach time in Zanzibar, it was time for the main event: safari! We flew from Zanzibar to Arusha on the mainland – a small town that serves as the main gateway to Tanzania’s incredible national parks.

Where to Stay in Arusha

We stayed at a peaceful oasis right in the middle of busy streets – The Charity Hotel offered us incredible value. For only about $40 per night, we had:

  • A beautiful room with views of Mount Meru (4,600 meters – Tanzania’s second-highest mountain)
  • Breakfast in a garden that resembled the Garden of Eden
  • Comfortable beds in a cooler climate than Zanzibar

Safari Day 1: Tarangire National Park - Elephant Paradise

For three days, we traveled in a proper safari jeep – the kind you dream about! We booked with our safari here, and our vehicle was a 4×4 with a pop-up roof, perfect for wildlife viewing and photography.

Why Tarangire Instead of Serengeti

While Serengeti is the most famous safari park in Tanzania, it’s often crowded. Tarangire is just as beautiful but far less touristy. The two-hour drive from Arusha was bumpy but worth every second.

What Makes Tarangire Special

  • Known as “Elephant Paradise” for good reason
  • About 50,000 elephants throughout Tanzania
  • Almost 10% live in this relatively small park
  • Park size: approximately 3,000 square kilometers
  • Less crowded than Serengeti but equally spectacular

Animals We Saw in Tarangire

The Big Five Progress: 3 out of 5

  1. Lions – Our first Big Five sighting! We found a whole family chilling near the road. The guide got a tip from another guide (that’s how it works in Tanzania). The family had many male youngsters, and they put on quite a show for us, walking all around our vehicle.

  2. Elephants – SO MANY elephants! We saw about 50 in one group, and they came incredibly close to our jeep. Watching them walk in formation reminded us of that scene from The Jungle Book. Throughout the park, elephants were everywhere – truly living up to the “Elephant Paradise” name.

  3. Buffalo – We spotted these massive animals with their large, sharp horns. Despite looking like tame cows, they’re one of the Big Five and can even defeat lions with their powerful horns.
Other Amazing Wildlife in Tarangire

  • Mongooses right in the parking lot
  • Waterbucks and antelopes
  • Zebras (including adorable babies)
  • Warthogs (Pumba and his family!)
  • Red-billed hornbills (Zazu from The Lion King!)
  • White-headed buffalo weavers
  • Giraffes
  • Ostriches
  • Southern ground hornbill (endangered species)
  • Marabou storks
  • Helmeted guinea fowls

Best Part: January is baby season! Almost every animal we saw had little ones – from lion cubs to baby elephants. Absolutely adorable.

Safari Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater - Natural Wonder of the World

From Karatu (a small town where we stayed), we drove 15-30 minutes to enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater itself is only about 14 kilometers in size, making it the largest crater in the world.

What Makes Ngorongoro Crater Unique

  • About 25,000 animals live on the crater floor
  • Highest concentration of predator animals in the entire world
  • Animals live in their own ecosystem inside the crater rim
  • The kingdom is ruled by lions
  • Incredible biodiversity in a relatively small area

The Name “Ngorongoro” comes from the sound of a cowbell used by the local farmers. The area is still home to many Masai people in their traditional red clothing.

The Journey Into the Crater

First, we stopped at the crater rim for an overview – everything you see below is where you’ll drive and spot animals. The road down was incredibly bumpy (more like a “free massage” than a road!), taking about 30 minutes from the viewpoint to reach the crater floor.

Ngorongoro Crater view
Animals We Saw in Ngorongoro Crater

The Big Five Progress: 4 out of 5!

  1. Elephants – Spotted immediately, including adorable baby elephants
  2. Buffalo – Hundreds of them throughout the crater
  3. Lions – Multiple sightings, including one sleeping in the grass near the lake
  4. Black Rhinos – The fourth Big Five! With only 30 specimens in the crater, this is one of the rarest animals here. We were incredibly lucky to see not just one, but get quite close views.
Other Spectacular Wildlife in Ngorongoro
  • Hundreds of zebras with babies
  • Wildebeest
  • Eland antelopes (largest antelope species)
  • Hippos swimming in the large crater lake
  • Hyenas walking along the lake edge
  • Warthogs (more Pumba sightings!)
  • Abdim’s storks
  • Kori bustards
  • Ostriches (one male with two females)
  • Crowned cranes

Lunch with a View
We had lunch at a stunning spot overlooking the lake with hippos and mountains in the background. Be warned though – there are about 50 other people using the facilities, so use the toilet when you see one!

Why Ngorongoro is Perfect for Families
Because the animals are so easy to spot in the crater, this is one of the best places in Africa to take kids on safari. We saw more animals here in one day than during our entire time in Tarangire!

Safari Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park - Tree-Climbing Lions

Our third and final safari day took us to Lake Manyara National Park, located between Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater (about an hour from both).

What Makes Lake Manyara Special

  • World-famous for tree-climbing lions
  • Unique pink lake created by microbes
  • Endemic Manyara monkey (white-throated blue swamp monkey)
  • Founded in 1960 primarily to protect elephants
  • Almost 1,000 elephants in only 100 square kilometers
  • Highest concentration of elephants anywhere in the world
  • Park size: about 325 square kilometers (two-thirds is the lake itself)

Geographic Setting
The park sits between Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley – a massive crack in the earth that runs through Africa for thousands of kilometers.

Animals We Saw in Lake Manyara

The Big Five Progress: Still 4 out of 5 (We didn’t spot the elusive leopard on any of our safari days, but we weren’t disappointed!)

  1. Buffalo – Many spotted throughout the park
  2. Elephants – Including the cutest baby elephants

Other Amazing Wild life in Lake Manyara
  • Manyara monkeys (endemic to this park)
  • Green baboons (including a father with morning wood – nature is hilarious!)
  • Impalas
  • Zebras
  • Giraffes (about 12 of them walked right around our car!)
  • Warthogs (Pumba’s entire family)
  • Lions (sleeping in bushes, though not climbing trees during our visit)
  • Green vervet monkeys

Baby Animal Season
January continued to bless us with baby animals everywhere – baby elephants, baby zebras, baby impalas. The cuteness was almost too much to handle!

Practical Information for Tanzania Safari

Best Time to Visit

We visited in January, which is perfect because it’s calving season for most animals. Furthermore, the weather is pleasant, visibility is high, and there is less rain than in other months.
