The Underground River, Palawan

The Underground River in Puerto Princesa

To begin with, deep in the heart of the Philippines lies one of the most extraordinary natural wonders on Earth: the Puerto Princesa Underground River in Palawan. In essence, this remarkable waterway is hidden beneath towering limestone mountains and lush tropical rainforest, and consequently, the 8.2 km-long river flows directly through a spectacular cave system. Therefore, it is internationally recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

Subsequently, in this comprehensive guide, which is based on our own personal visit, we’ll show you exactly how to experience this unforgettable destination. Specifically, we will cover everything from getting there and what to expect on the tour, including wildlife encounters, as well as practical tips, and crucial insider insights. Ultimately, this information should allow you to plan your perfect trip.

Getting to Palawan & Puerto Princesa

To reach the underground river, fly into Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan. The city is named after the daughter of Spanish Queen Isabella, who tragically died young — hence the name “Princess Harbor.”

We stayed in this hotel on the Southern coast of the island, outside the city, where you’ll find peaceful beach resorts surrounded by nature.

Getting to the Underground River

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located about 40 km north of the city, but don’t underestimate the journey — it’s a bumpy two-hour drive through rural Palawan. Most visitors book a day tour which costs around $40 per person and includes transportation, guide, activities, and lunch.

A Full-Day Experience: The Complete Tour

🐍 Explore the Mangrove Forest

Before entering the cave, most tours include a mangrove river cruise — a serene boat trip through lush jungle waterways. We spotted poisonous mangrove snakes, bright blue crabs, monitor lizards, and even Philippine hornbills and long-tailed macaques.

You might also see locals collecting tamilok — tree-dwelling woodworms considered a local delicacy (often eaten raw!).

🚤 Entering the Underground River

From the visitor center, a 15-minute boat ride across the sea takes you to a secluded beach. A short jungle walk brings you to the cave entrance and this is where the real adventure begins.

Visitors receive an audio guide (available in multiple languages) explaining the cave’s history, geology, and wildlife. For conservation reasons, talking is not allowed during the cave tour, so the audio device is essential.

Inside the Cave: A World Beneath the Earth

As your small paddle boat enters the cave, you’re immediately plunged into total darkness — except for the beam of your guide’s flashlight. Stalactites and stalagmites form surreal shapes, and you’ll hear the flapping of thousands of bats overhead (a helmet is provided to protect you from their droppings!).

Researchers have discovered unique species here — from blind fish and rare insects to dugongs (sea cows) living near the cave entrance. The river stretches over 8.2 km, but tours usually cover about 1.5 km inside.

The New 7 Wonders of Nature

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, alongside the Amazon Rainforest and the Iguazu Falls. Its combination of geology, biodiversity, and sheer natural beauty makes it one of the most awe-inspiring experiences in Southeast Asia.
