Tobago: The Caribbean’s Best Kept Nature Secret

Tobago Travel Guide 2026

After island hopping through Martinique and St. Lucia, we landed in what can only be described as a natural paradise: Tobago. While 1.5 million people live in the dual-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, only about 60,000 live on Tobago. That 4% makes all the difference—it feels remote, untouched, and exceptionally green.

The Retreat that Started it All: Castara

Usually, you book a flight and then find a hotel. For us, it was the other way around. We saw Castara Retreats online—a collection of luxury treehouses perched on a hill—and said: “We have to go there.”

Waking up in a wooden lodge looking out over the Caribbean Sea, surrounded by hummingbirds and the sound of the rainforest, is an experience you won’t find in a standard resort.

Castara Beach: Fishing is Life

Right below our treehouse lies Castara Bay, one of the most authentic spots on the island.

  • The Tradition: We watched local fishermen working the nets on the beach, a spectacular sight followed by hundreds of seagulls and giant Frigatebirds waiting for their share.

  • The Vibes: On Thursdays, the weekend already begins here. The locals organize bonfires on the beach with live music and delicious local food. It’s the ultimate “no shoes, no news” atmosphere.

Exploring the Jungle: Waterfalls & Main Ridge

To see the rest of the island, we rented a “little monster”—a Suzuki Jimny. It’s the perfect car for Tobago’s winding, hilly roads.

  • Main Ridge Forest Reserve: This is the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere. We hiked the Gilpin Trace (about 2 hours), which is perfect for families. We saw tropical birds, rare plants, and felt the true heartbeat of the jungle.

  • Argyle Falls: Tobago’s highest waterfall at 54 meters. It descends over five steps, and the 20-minute hike to get there is just as beautiful as the falls themselves.

  • The Secret Waterfall: Just 500 meters from Castara Beach, behind the hill of our retreat, lies a hidden waterfall that feels like a scene straight out of The Jungle Book.

The Pristine North: Englishman’s Bay

If you want to see what the Caribbean looked like 50 years ago, drive to Englishman’s Bay. There are no buildings, no crowds—just a perfect crescent of sand, turquoise water, and palm trees. It’s the definition of pristine.

Pigeon Point: The Famous Jetty

For our final days, we moved to the Western tip: Pigeon Point. This is where you’ll find the iconic thatched-roof jetty.

  • The Atmosphere: It’s busier than Castara because of tourists coming over from Trinidad for the weekend, but the water is crystal clear and perfect for snorkeling.

  • Underwater World: From our balcony, we could see Stingrays swimming by. Once in the water, we encountered Triggerfish and the peculiar Scrawled Filefish.

Travel Tips for Tobago in 2026

  • Getting There: In 2026, international flight connections to ANR Robinson International Airport (TAB) have increased, with direct flights from London, New York, and several Caribbean hubs. If you are coming from Trinidad, the “fast ferry” or a 20-minute Caribbean Airlines flight are your best bets.

  • Eco-Tourism: Tobago is pushing hard for sustainability. Choose “Green Key” certified accommodations and always respect the wildlife.

  • Beer Tip: Try the local Carib or Stag beer. Pro tip from the video: it’s best served with a fresh wedge of lime (even if you have to pick it yourself!).
