Safari in Tanzania: Lake Manyara
Best place to spot elephants and the tree climbing lions
Where in the world is the best place to spot elephants? That is Lake Manyara in Tanzania. There live thousands of them on just 100 square kilometer! Lake Manyara is absolute worth a visit. This safari paradise is world famous for the tree climbing lions. Even though it’s hard to spot them, we will give it a try of course!
Together with our private guide of Best View Safaris we visit Lake Manyara.
What Makes Lake Manyara Special
Lake Manyara is small but full of magic. Covering about 325 square kilometers — with nearly two-thirds of it taken up by the shimmering pink lake — it feels like stepping into a natural amphitheater, tucked between the Great Rift Valley escarpment and the water’s edge.
The lake itself glows pink thanks to millions of tiny microbes, attracting huge flocks of flamingos that turn the horizon into a living watercolor. But that’s not all this park is known for.
Lake Manyara is world-famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior you’ll only find in a few places on Earth. The park is also home to a species that exists nowhere else in the world — the Manyara monkey, also called the white-throated blue swamp monkey.
Established back in 1960 mainly to protect its growing elephant population, Lake Manyara now shelters almost 1,000 elephants within just 100 square kilometers — one of the highest concentrations anywhere in the world.
A Perfect Geographic Setting
The park sits dramatically between the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara itself — a geological wonder where Africa seems to crack open before your eyes. One moment you’re driving through dense forest; the next, you’re surrounded by open savannah with the escarpment rising steeply beside you. It’s a breathtaking contrast that makes this park feel truly unique.
Our Safari in Lake Manyara Experience
We started the day early, full of excitement — and within minutes, the sightings began. Massive buffalos grazed lazily beside the road, while groups of elephants — including some incredibly cute babies — wandered gracefully between the trees.
Our Big Five progress was still 4 out of 5; that elusive leopard managed to stay hidden again. But honestly, we couldn’t have asked for more.
Everywhere we looked, life was buzzing:
Playful Manyara monkeys jumping through the branches
Green baboons, including one father who gave us a rather… natural morning show (nature’s sense of humor at its best!)
Impalas and zebras peacefully grazing together
A dozen giraffes that casually walked right around our car
Families of warthogs trotting by — yes, Pumba’s entire clan!
And even lions resting in the shade, although none of them felt like climbing a tree that day.
Baby Animal Season
January turned out to be baby season in Tanzania, and it was absolutely heart-melting. Everywhere we looked were tiny, wobbly versions of their grown-up selves — baby elephants learning to use their trunks, baby zebras running in circles, baby impalas taking their first steps.
The cuteness level was almost unbearable, and it added such a joyful energy to every moment of the safari.
Why Lake Manyara Deserves a Spot on Your Safari Route
Lake Manyara might be small, but it’s one of the most diverse and intimate safari experiences in Tanzania. You don’t need to drive far to see an incredible variety of animals and landscapes — from lush forests and open grasslands to the reflective lake that stretches as far as the eye can see.
If you’re planning a trip through Northern Tanzania, make sure to include this hidden gem between Tarangire and Ngorongoro. It’s the perfect place to start your safari adventure — and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be the lucky one to spot those famous tree-climbing lions.
