Why El Questro is our Kids' Favorite Place in Australia

The Ultimate Guide to the Crown Jewel of the Kimberley

After our dusty adventure in the Bungle Bungles, we swapped the red desert for the lush, emerald greens of El Questro Wilderness Park. Spanning a massive 700,000 hectares, this park is a playground of rainforests, dramatic gorges, and thermal springs. It didn’t take long for us to realize why this is the highlight of the trip for Jens and Céline!

Transitioning Gears

Coming off the rough tracks of the Bungle Bungles, our first job was “mechanic duty”: putting the tires back to 40 PSI for the paved roads heading into Kununurra. Before hitting the Gibb River Road again, we found a hidden gem for the kids: a local water park that was totally free! It was the perfect “reset” before diving back into the wild.

Emma Gorge: Ice Baths and Sunbathing Snakes

The hike to Emma Gorge is legendary, and for a good reason.

  • The Hike: It’s a roughly one-hour trek over rocky terrain. We even encountered a Green Tree Snake on the path! Not dangerous, but it definitely kept us on our toes.

  • The Reward: At the end, you’re greeted by 56-meter-high cliffs and a massive swimming hole.

  • The Chill: The water is “refreshing,” but let’s be honest—it feels like a thousand ice-cold knives! Still, the kids loved the challenge.

Zebedee Springs: The Tropical Dream

If Emma Gorge is the ice bath, Zebedee Springs is the warm hug our kids couldn’t get enough of.

  • The Experience: A short walk through a dense palm forest leads you to a literal tropical oasis.

  • The Thermal Pools: Warm water rises from deep within the earth, creating perfect natural jacuzzis.

  • Wout of the World Tip: Get there early! The springs close at noon. Arriving around 10:00 AM allowed us to beat the biggest crowds and let the kids soak in peace.

Camping life at El Questro Station

We spent the night at El Questro Station, which feels like a tiny, vibrant village in the heart of the Kimberley. With live music, cold drinks, and surprisingly delicious woodfired pizzas, it was the perfect end to our days. Even with the nights dropping to 0°C, the memories of the warm springs kept us going!
