Road Trip Through Western Australia: Broome
Road Trip Through Western Australia: Broome
After a long flight from the Netherlands and a short stop in Perth, we land in the tropical town of Broome, the gateway to the legendary Kimberley region of Western Australia. The air immediately feels warmer and more humid — it’s clear we’ve arrived in the tropics.
Broome may be small, but it is surrounded by spectacular nature. Red desert sands meet turquoise seas, and within a 15-minute drive in any direction, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with breathtaking landscapes.
Our first stop: Roebuck Bay, just east of town, where the red cliffs meet crystal-clear water. A short drive to the west brings us to Gantheaume Point, where the colors are even more striking — fiery rocks, green mangroves, and one of the bluest oceans you’ll ever see. At low tide, you can even spot dinosaur footprints, fossilized in the rocks!
Things to Do North of Broome
North of Broome, an unsealed road leads to Willie Creek in the Kimberley region, famous for its pearl farms. Here, oysters are cultivated not just for consumption, but primarily for the precious pearls they contain — a fascinating glimpse into Broome’s pearl history.
Further north lies James Price Point, an untouched coastal paradise with red rock formations and endless ocean views. Standing there, with no one else around, you realize just how peaceful and remote Western Australia can be — one of the last true frontiers.
Cable Beach
After our visit to Willie Creek in the Kimberley region, we eventually return to Broome. Now awaits the town’s most famous attraction — Cable Beach. Stretching an impressive 22 kilometers, this beach is considered one of Australia’s most iconic, featuring powder-white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and camel rides at sunset.
Since we were camping, we set up our camp nearby with our 4×4 rooftop tent from WA Experts. It was the perfect setup: palm trees, a cooling ocean breeze, and a pool to refresh in the heat.
Finally, as the day draws to a close, locals and travelers gather on the beach for Broome’s world-famous sunset. At that moment, the sky erupts in shades of orange and red — it’s as if the horizon is on fire. This experience is truly unforgettable.

Heading Further into the Kimberleys
After a few incredible days in Broome and the Kimberley region, it’s time to move on. We stock up on supplies in Derby, the last town before heading into the wild outback. From here begins the legendary Gibb River Road — hundreds of kilometers of red dirt, river crossings, and spectacular gorges.
We check the tire pressure, fill the tanks, and drive toward Windjana Gorge, where towering cliffs rise from the desert floor. The next chapter of our Australian adventure has officially begun.
