2. The Sacred Quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa)
This elevated stone terrace served as the spiritual heart of the ancient city and features some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful sacred architecture. It originally housed the Temple of the Tooth Relic (which is now kept in Kandy).

Rankoth Vehera: Standing 60 meters tall with a diameter of 170 meters, this is the largest stupa in Polonnaruwa (and the fourth largest in all of Sri Lanka).
Kiri Vihara: Meaning ‘Milk Stupa’, this monument earned its name because its original, bright white 12th-century lime plaster remains surprisingly intact underneath the moss.
5. Lankatilaka Image House
A grand, cathedral-like structure with soaring 17-meter-high brick walls. Walking through the narrow entrance, you’re greeted by a giant headless standing Buddha statue towering at the far end.

Pro Tip: Bring thick socks! Walking barefoot on sun-baked stone floors can literally burn your feet by midday.

Polonnaruwa is part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle:
From Anuradhapura: ~100 km (2 hours by private car/tuk-tuk, around $50 USD).
