Magnetic Island: The Ultimate Wildlife & Paradise Beach Guide
After our thrilling quest to track down the prehistoric cassowary in Mission Beach, we jumped back into our trusted 4×4 campervan—fully equipped with its dual rooftop tents from WA Experts—and steered further south down the Queensland coast. A scenic three-hour drive brought us to the sunny coastal city of Townsville, the ultimate launching pad for one of Australia’s most magical offshore escapes: Magnetic Island.

In this comprehensive travel guide, we share our favorite family adventures and practical insider tips for visiting Townsville and Magnetic Island!
Townsville: City Safaris and Unexpected Camping Guests
Before boarding the ferry to Magnetic Island, we took some time to explore Townsville. Nestled between Brisbane and Cairns, this sun-drenched coastal city of 165,000 residents beautifully blends its historic colonial charm with modern seaside architecture and vibrant street art. It’s also home to a major Australian military base.
For families traveling in a campervan, Townsville is a fantastic, budget-friendly place to set up camp compared to some of Queensland’s busier tourist hubs. We checked into a great caravan park that featured an awesome mini-waterpark right next to the swimming pool—an absolute dream for the kids!
Australia’s wildlife never fails to surprise us. While we were relaxing by our van watching a movie in the evening, a wild Allied rock wallaby casually hopped right past our camp! Usually quite shy, this little guy was incredibly relaxed, allowing us to follow him over to our neighbor’s caravan for some of the cutest close-up footage of our trip so far.
The Legend of Magnetic Island: Why Cook’s Compass Went Wild
The real highlight of our stop lies just five miles off the coast: Magnetic Island. This stunning island received its unique name from Captain James Cook in 1770. As he sailed past, he claimed the island threw his ship’s magnetic compass completely out of whack. Whether that mysterious force was real or not, the island still acts like a magnet for travelers today! Boasting dramatic rocky landscapes, dense eucalyptus forests, and over 300 days of sunshine a year, it truly is a tropical paradise.
Getting There & Around
Getting to the island is incredibly straightforward. The SeaLink passenger ferry departs from the Townsville terminal over 15 times a day, dropping you off at Nelly Bay in just under 25 minutes. Once you step off the ferry, you have options. Many travelers choose to rent one of the island’s iconic, brightly colored ‘Topless Cars’ (vintage Mini Mokes) that have been a staple of the island’s retro-cool vibe for decades. The Forts Walk: Spotting Six Wild Koalas
Magnetic Island is home to Northern Australia’s largest colony of wild koalas, and the absolute best place to see them is The Forts Walk. This stunning trail perfectly blends incredible history with pristine nature:
The History: The track leads you up to historic World War II fortifications. These concrete bunkers and observation decks were used by the military to spot enemy ships and intercept radio signals. From the top structure, you are rewarded with a breathtaking, 360-degree panoramic view of the Coral Sea and the island’s emerald peaks.
The Koalas: Keep your eyes glued to the eucalyptus trees along the path! Just 15 minutes into our hike, we spotted our first koalas nestled high in the branches. While they sleep for up to 20 hours a day, one adult gave us a little stretch before dozing off again. The ultimate highlight was finding a mother koala fully awake with a tiny baby riding on her back, looking straight down at us. With a final tally of six wild koalas spotted, this warm hike was a massive success!
Horsehoe Bay
Alma Bay and Geoffrey Bay
Next, we headed to the charming village of Arcadia to visit Alma Bay, a beautiful, sheltered cove that is perfect for a family swim. But the most interactive wildlife experience on the island is just a short stroll away at the rocky headland of Geoffrey Bay.
This old jetty site is home to a colony of wild rock wallabies that live among the giant granite boulders. Armed with a bag of healthy treats, we went down to see if they wanted to say hello. Safe to say, the way to a wallaby’s heart is through its stomach! They eagerly hopped right down from the rocks and gently ate carrots straight from our hands. We got lucky yet again, spotting a tiny baby joey poking its head out from its mother’s pouch. As a fun bonus, a few colorful wild lizards joined in on the feeding action too!
A Perfect Island Finale
As the sun began to dip, casting a brilliant golden glow over the coastline, we walked the scenic coastal road back toward Nelly Bay. Reflecting on our time here, it’s easy to see why Magnetic Island is a quintessential Queensland experience. It has a wonderfully laid-back, old-school island charm mixed with rugged mountains, paradise beaches, and wildlife encounters that are incredibly accessible.
Back at our campsite in Townsville, we celebrated an unforgettable day the best way we know how: cracking open an ice-cold Great Northern beer, ordering a massive stack of pizzas for the family, and editing our footage under the palm trees. Our campervan is ready, and the open road is calling!

📅 Best Time to Visit: The dry season (May to October) is the absolute sweet spot for exploring Northern Queensland. The weather is beautifully warm, rainfall is minimal, and you avoid the peak summer heat and stinger (jellyfish) season.
🛌 Where to Stay in Townsville: If you’re looking for a hotel or resort, The Strand (Townsville’s beachfront promenade) offers amazing accommodation with gorgeous views looking out towards Magnetic Island. For campervans and caravans, Townsville has excellent family-friendly parks with top-tier amenities like resort-style pools. Leaving your camper in Townsville for a day trip to the island saves you a significant amount on vehicle ferry costs!
🏡 Where to Stay on Magnetic Island: Planning to spend a few nights on the island? Horseshoe Bay is the premier choice for beachfront dining, boutique accommodation, and stunning sunsets. Nelly Bay is highly convenient as it sits right at the ferry terminal and offers beautiful marina apartments. For campers, there are some lovely, nature-focused eco-resorts and campsites scattered across the island.
🚌 Island Transport: The local bus is the most affordable way to travel ($3 to $5 AUD for an all-day ticket). For the ultimate island experience and total freedom, rent a colorful open Moke or ‘Topless Car’ right at the ferry terminal.
🥕 Wallaby Etiquette: If you visit the rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay, please only feed them wildlife-safe snacks like carrots or sweet potatoes. Avoid bread or processed human food. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to find them active.
