The Ultimate Poland Road Trip Guide to Krakow
Wild & Cheap: The Ultimate Poland Road Trip Guide – From Hidden Forests to Royal Streets
Are you dreaming of an epic European adventure that doesn’t drain your bank account? Look no further. Poland (or as the locals call it, Polska) is the ultimate destination for road trippers seeking a mix of raw nature, quirky stays, and world-class culture on a “wild and cheap” budget.
We crossed the border from Germany and discovered that you don’t need a fortune to experience the best of Europe. From sleeping in retro caravans to exploring one of the best zoos on the continent, here is our comprehensive guide to a road trip through Western and Southern Poland.
Curious where you can find the hidden gem on the picture? This is in Germany! You can read the full blog and watch the video travel guide here.
💰 The Budget: How Cheap is Poland?
Before we hit the road, let’s talk numbers. Poland is incredibly wallet-friendly compared to Western Europe. Here’s what we spent:
Accommodation: €16 to €32 per night (Hotels & Camping). Read in the blog the exact locations!
Petrol: Approx. €1.55 per liter.
Dining Out: A massive pizza for €10; a large 0.5L beer in a café for only €3.23.
Nature: Almost all hiking and nature spots are FREE.
🌲 Stop 1: Jelenia Góra – Into the Wild
Immediately after crossing the German border, the landscape transforms. Poland is a woodland country—roughly a third of it is covered in dense, mysterious forest.
Retro Camping Vibes
We started our journey in Jelenia Góra. To keep it “wild,” we stayed at a local campsite in an old-school caravan. For only €20 a night, we had a cozy, vintage home on wheels that felt like stepping back into the 70s. Even with a bit of rain, there is nothing like the sound of raindrops on a caravan roof while you cook dinner on the porch.
The Mystical Colored Lakes (Kolorowe Jeziorka)
A 45-minute drive from the campsite takes you into the Rudawy Janowickie mountains. This area is home to the Kolorowe Jeziorka—a series of lakes formed in the excavations of former German mines.
The Yellow Lake: Surrounded by steep banks and pine trees.
The Purple Lake: The true highlight. The water has a deep, rusty-red/purple color due to iron compounds and sulfates in the soil. It feels like you’ve stepped onto another planet.
Pro Tip: Even in “chilly” weather, the hike is refreshing and the colors of the water pop even more against the grey sky.
🐘 Stop 2: Opole – The Jungle of the East
Continuing east, we hit Opole. While the city’s outskirts might give you that “Soviet-era” concrete vibe, the heart of the city is a lush, green surprise.
Where we stayed
In Opole, we stayed at a hotel that cost us only €32 per night. Don’t let the somewhat grey, Soviet-style exterior fool you; the rooms were surprisingly modern and much better than we expected (even if Jens managed to turn ours into a playground within five minutes!). It’s a great, budget-friendly base for exploring the city and the nearby zoo.
Opole Zoo: A Safari in the City
Don’t let the word “zoo” fool you. Located on Bolko Island, the Opole Zoo is widely considered one of the best in Europe. After being destroyed by a flood in 1997, it was rebuilt as a modern, animal-centric paradise.
The Concept: It’s more of a safari park. The enclosures are massive and designed as “playgrounds” where animals roam freely.
Rare Species: We were stunned to see the Giant Anteater and the Eurasian Lynx.
The Vibe: Because of the natural layout, the animals are incredibly active. You’ll see lemurs jumping right behind you and big cats prowling in habitats that mimic the wild perfectly.
Price: At just €10.80 per person, it is a steal for a full day of adventure.
🏰 Stop 3: Krakow – The Crown Jewel of Poland
After a short 2-hour drive from Opole, you reach Krakow, the cultural heart of the country. This city is a must-include on any Polish driving holiday.
Luxury for Less
We found a hotel right on the rim of the Old Town (Stare Miasto) for just €16 a night. Propped up against the historic city walls, it’s the perfect base to explore. Note: Parking in the center is tricky. Find a paid lot about 600m away to save stress!
Must-See Highlights of Krakow:
The Main Market Square (Rynek Główny): This is the largest medieval square in Europe. Grab a coffee, watch the horse-drawn carriages, and listen for the famous trumpet call from St. Mary’s Basilica.
Wawel Royal Castle: This stunning complex sits atop a hill overlooking the Vistula River. Legend has it a dragon once lived in the cave below! Look for the fire-breathing dragon statue at the entrance.
Kazimierz (Jewish Quarter): Once a separate city, this district is now the heartbeat of Krakow’s nightlife and food scene. It’s gritty, artistic, and full of history.
Schindler’s Factory: A haunting but essential museum that tells the story of Krakow under Nazi occupation.
Vistula River Walk: Perfect for a sunset stroll to see the city lights reflect on the water.
