The Ultimate Mekong River Guide: From Thailand to Luang Prabang
From Thailand to Laos: The Ultimate Mekong River Adventure
After an unforgettable month in Northern Thailand, it was time for a new chapter. We left the mountains of Chiang Mai behind and set our sights on the “Mother of Waters”: the mighty Mekong River in Laos. Whether you are a backpacker on a budget looking for the classic slowboat experience or a “flashpacker” seeking an affordable boutique cruise, this 2-day journey is the most iconic way to enter the heart of Laos. We’ve done both, and in this guide and video, we’ll show you exactly how to plan your own epic Mekong River Cruise.
The Border Crossing: From Chiang Khong to Huay Xai
The Mekong River Cruise journey starts with a relaxed taxi ride to the border at Chiang Khong. A golden tip for anyone making this crossing: make sure you have crispy, brand-new US dollar bills for your visa (around $40 per person). The Lao customs are very strict and won’t accept wrinkled or torn notes!
After a smooth crossing, we arrived in Huay Xai, a sleepy border town. You can find decent guest houses here for as little as $18 a night. We ended the day with an iconic “Beerlao” while watching a colorful sunset over the Mekong. Cheers to a new adventure!
Choosing Your Vessel: Basic Slowboat vs. Boutique Cruise
One of the most common questions we get is: “How do I actually get down the river?” There are essentially two ways to experience the Mekong River Cruise, and both are surprisingly affordable.
The Backpacker Slowboat (The Classic Choice): This is the authentic way to travel. These long wooden boats are packed with locals and travelers alike. It’s very inexpensive and a great way to meet people, but keep in mind it’s basic—you’ll usually sit on old car seats and need to bring your own supplies. You can book your slow boat adventure tickets here with an exclusive discount with code WOUTOFTHEWORLD5.
The Boutique Cruise (Affordable Luxury): For just a little more, you can opt for a more comfortable experience. This version includes fixed tables, a delicious traditional Lao lunch served on board, and more organized stops at local villages and caves.
What We Paid
For our Boutique Cruise, we paid $140 USD per person. This was a great deal because it included almost everything:
Transfers (from our hotel in Huay Xai to the boat, and from the pier in Luang Prabang to our final hotel).
The 2-day escorted cruise with daily lunches and refreshments.
All sightseeing stops along the way.
Travel insurance for the duration of the trip.
Traveling with kids? Children often go for half price, and since Céline was only 1 year old, she traveled for free!
Pro Tip: We booked our accommodation in Pak Beng separately. Doing it yourself is often much cheaper than booking it as a full package through the cruise company, and it gives you more freedom to choose your own oasis for the night.
Our Choice: Back in 2016, we took the basic slowboat and loved the raw energy of it. However, for this trip, we opted for the Boutique Cruise. It offered that perfect balance: a bit more comfort and great food for the kids, while still feeling like a rugged outdoor excursion through the mountains.
The Mekong River Cruise: Life on the Water
The Mekong River, at 4,350 km long, is the lifeblood of Laos. For two days, you’ll sail past misty mountains and local life.
Day 1: Remote Villages: Along the way, we stopped at a local village of the Hmong people. It feels like stepping back in time; people here still live entirely off the land, far away from modern technology.
Pakbeng: Halfway through the Mekong River Cruise, we stayed overnight in Pakbeng. This town is dramatically situated on the cliffs along the river. For $20, you get a great room, and the local pumpkin curry here is absolutely divine!
Day 2: Spiritual Caves and Scorpion Whiskey
On the second day of the Mekong River Cruise, the landscape becomes even more mystical. There are two stops you absolutely cannot miss:
Pak Ou Caves: These sacred caves set into limestone cliffs house thousands of Buddha statues and have been used as a spiritual site since the 8th century.
Whiskey Village: A local village famous for its hand-woven textiles and infamous rice whiskey. This isn’t your average drink; we’re talking about bottles featuring cobras or scorpions! I decided to skip the tasting, but would you dare?
5. Arriving in Luang Prabang
After two days of sailing, we finally reached Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town full of French colonial influences and stunning golden temples. It is, without a doubt, our favorite town in Asia. Read our blogs and watch our videos about Luang Prabang and other places in Laos.
Wout’s Travel Tips for Laos
Visa Essentials: Bring passport photos and ensure your dollar bills are perfect.
Stay Connected: Buy a local SIM card immediately; they are incredibly cheap and the 5G network is surprisingly strong throughout the country. You can also obtain for an eSIM via this link with discount code WOUTHOLA.
Pack Light: You only need a small bag for the boat; your main luggage is usually stored in the hull.
When to Go: Best Travel Time- The Dry Season (November to February): This is the most popular time to visit. The weather is pleasantly cool and dry, which is ideal for the 2-day boat trip. You’ll have the best chance of clear blue skies and misty mountain mornings.
- The “Green” Season (June to October): If you don’t mind a tropical shower, the landscape is incredibly lush and green during these months. The waterfalls are at their most powerful, though the river can be a bit wilder.
