After an unforgettable jungle safari among wild elephant herds in Hurulu Eco Park, we packed our bags and headed deeper into Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. Destination: Sigiriya. The moment you drive into the area and see that colossal rock fortress rising dramatically above the emerald jungle canopy, it hits you—this place fully deserves its title as the 8th Wonder of the World.
Sigiriya is often referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World—and the moment you see this massive rock fortress towering 200 meters above the jungle, you’ll completely understand why!
From standing atop the legendary Lion Rock to watching the sunrise over the valley from Pidurangala and relaxing at Hotel Sigiriya, our time here was pure magic. Whether you are traveling solo, as a couple, or exploring with kids like us, here is everything you need to know to make the most of your trip.

What to Do in Sigiriya: The Top Highlights
1. Climbing the Legendary Lion Rock
Rising 200 meters above the surrounding plains, Lion Rock (Sigiriya Citadel) is an ancient palace and fortress complex built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. Climbing to the top is far more than just a workout—it’s an immersive journey through one of Asia’s most impressive archaeological sites.
Climb Duration & Difficulty:
The entire route to the top consists of roughly 1,200 steps. Depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to admire the views, the climb up takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Plan to spend around 2.5 to 3 hours in total for the full experience, including exploring the ruins at the summit, taking photos, and walking back down.Entrance Fees:
Tickets cost $36 USD per adult (free for children under 6, and half-price for ages 6–12). You can buy your tickets directly at the main entrance gate using credit card or cash (USD or LKR).Best Time to Visit:
The gates open early at 6:30 AM, which is by far the absolute best time to start climbing. Heading up early allows you to beat the intense tropical heat and avoid long queues at the narrower metal staircases. Late afternoon around 3:30 PM – 4:00 PM is another great option for cooler temperatures and beautiful golden hour light.The Route & Highlights:
Your walk begins at ground level through the world’s oldest landscaped Water Gardens. Mid-way up, a spiral staircase leads you to the ancient Sigiriya Frescoes, followed by the famous Mirror Wall. Before the final steep stretch, you’ll reach the Lion’s Paw Gate, where two massive carved stone paws guard the final staircase up to the summit palace ruins and its sweeping 360-degree jungle views.
2. Pidurangala Rock: The Best Viewpoint in Sri Lanka
While Lion Rock is incredible to climb, you can’t actually see Lion Rock when you are standing on it! That’s where Pidurangala Rock comes in. Located right opposite Sigiriya, this neighboring peak offers the absolute best photographic view of Lion Rock itself.
Climb Duration & Difficulty:
The hike to the top takes about 30 to 45 minutes each way. The first 80% of the trail consists of uneven stone stairs passing through a quiet forest and an ancient monastery. The final 10 to 15 minutes require a bit of a boulder scramble over large granite rocks, which can be moderately challenging but very doable if you take your time.Entrance Fees:
Tickets cost just 1,000 LKR (~$3 USD) per person (cash only at the ticket booth). Because the trail starts by passing through an active Buddhist temple, your shoulders and knees must be covered for the first section of the hike (sarongs/wraps are usually available to borrow or rent at the entrance).Best Time to Visit:
Pidurangala is world-famous for its sunrise views. Aim to start your climb around 5:00 AM – 5:15 AM with a headlamp or phone flashlight. Reaching the flat granite summit just as the sun breaks over the horizon—illuminating Lion Rock in a golden glow—is pure magic. Sunset (starting around 4:30 PM) is also fantastic and slightly less crowded.The Route & Highlights:
The trail leads you past ancient cave temples and a massive 12.5-meter reclining Buddha statue carved into the rock wall. Once you scramble past the final boulders, the summit opens up into a vast, flat rock plateau with unobstructed 360-degree views of the valley and the giant silhouette of Lion Rock standing directly in front of you.
3. Exploring Sigiriya Village & Local Food
Beyond the famous rocks, the village of Sigiriya has a wonderfully relaxed, traveler-friendly atmosphere. The main stretch is lined with leafy cafes, fresh juice stands, and local handicraft shops. After a morning of climbing, there’s nothing better than stopping at a local eatery for a hot plate of fresh kottu roti or a refreshing coconut smoothie bowl.

The best weather window for Sigiriya is between January and April, when conditions are dry and clear. July and August are also great months to visit during the dry mid-season gap.

Is Sigiriya Doable with Kids?
Yes, absolutely! However, a little preparation goes a long way:
Stairs & Carriers:
Lion Rock has around 1,200 steps. Strollers are impossible here, so a sturdy, ergonomic baby or toddler carrier is essential if traveling with little ones. Older kids will love the adventure and the challenge of reaching the lion paws.The Pidurangala Scramble:
The very top of Pidurangala requires climbing over large boulders. Active kids will treat it like a natural playground, but take it slow if carrying a child on your back.Safety:
The staircases and top plateaus have secure railings, but keep a close eye on children near the outer edges and stay aware of wild monkeys along the paths.
