The Galápagos Islands in Ecuador are a true paradise for wildlife lovers. Nowhere else in the world can you see wild animals so easily in their natural environment. During our island-hopping adventure, one of our main stops was Isla Santa Cruz, the most central and most visited island in the Galápagos.
Santa Cruz is not only the gateway to the archipelago but also a destination full of wildlife, beautiful beaches, and important conservation projects.
How to Get to Isla Santa Cruz
The easiest way to reach the Galápagos is by flying from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to Baltra Island (GPS). From there, you’ll take a short bus and ferry ride to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz, the island’s main town.
From Santa Cruz, it’s easy to catch ferries to other islands like Isabela and San Cristóbal, making it the perfect base for your Galápagos trip.

Santa Cruz has a great mix of wildlife, nature, and culture. Here are the highlights you shouldn’t miss:
Charles Darwin Research Station
Learn more about the unique ecosystems of the Galápagos and conservation programs for giant tortoises. This is where the famous Lonesome George once lived.
Tortuga Bay
One of the most beautiful beaches in the Galápagos – a long stretch of white sand where you can spot marine iguanas, sea turtles, and sometimes even reef sharks in the shallow waters.
Las Grietas
A stunning natural swimming hole between volcanic rock walls. Perfect for a refreshing dip in crystal-clear water after a hike.
El Chato Tortoise Reserve
Head into the highlands to see giant tortoises roaming freely in their natural habitat – one of the most iconic experiences in the Galápagos.
Wildlife Spotting Everywhere
Throughout the island you’ll find land iguanas, marine iguanas, pelicans, colorful crabs, tropical fish, and of course sea lions relaxing by the shore.
Isla Santa Cruz Travel Tips
Use Santa Cruz as your main hub for ferries to Isla Isabela and San Cristóbal.
Puerto Ayora has the best selection of restaurants and cafés in the Galápagos.- Visit both the lowlands (beaches) and highlands (tortoises, lava tunnels) for a full island experience.
