Travel Guide to San Cristóbal, Galapagos Islands

Sea lion paradise San Cristóbal, Galápagos

Welcome to sea lion paradise – San Cristóbal, one of the most fascinating islands in the Galápagos. This Ecuadorian archipelago is a true wildlife haven, where you can experience rare animals in their natural habitat like nowhere else in the world.

In our earlier Galápagos adventures, we explored Santa Cruz, the central island known for its giant tortoises, and Isla Isabela, home to volcanic landscapes and the famous snorkeling site Los Túneles. Now it’s time to discover the third island on our journey: San Cristóbal.

How to Get to San Cristóbal

Getting to the Galápagos is already part of the adventure. From mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil), you fly to Baltra Airport near Santa Cruz. From there, you can travel by boat to other islands.

Here’s the route we took:

  • ✈️ Flight from Ecuador (Guayaquil) to Baltra Island

  • 🚐 Transfer to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz

  • ⛴️ Ferry to Isabela Island

  • ⛴️ Ferry back to Santa Cruz

  • ⛴️ Finally, a ferry ride to San Cristóbal

You can also fly directly from the mainland to San Cristóbal Airport (SCY), which is the most convenient option if you want to start your trip here.

Best Things to Do on San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal is a mix of laid-back island vibes, stunning beaches, and incredible wildlife encounters. Here are the highlights you shouldn’t miss:

🦭 Meet the Sea Lions Everywhere

The island is home to thousands of playful sea lions, and you’ll find them lounging on benches, sunbathing on beaches, and swimming right next to you.

Put on your mask and snorkel, and dive into crystal-clear waters to swim with green sea turtles, curious sea lions, and colorful fish.

🪨 Kicker Rock (León Dormido)

This iconic rock formation just off the coast is one of the top dive and snorkeling sites in the Galápagos. On our tour, we swam alongside hammerhead sharks, rays, sea turtles, and schools of tropical fish. Above the water, you’ll spot frigate birds and the famous blue-footed boobies.

🏝️ Relax on the Beaches

  • Playa Mann – close to town and perfect for spotting sea lions.

  • Playa Punta Carola – great for snorkeling and watching the sunset.

  • Puerto Chino – a bit further out, but one of the most beautiful white-sand beaches on the island.

San Cristóbal Travel Tips

  • 🛶 Book tours in advance for Kicker Rock and snorkeling trips – spots fill up quickly.

  • 💵 Bring cash (USD is the official currency in Ecuador) as ATMs can be limited.

  • 🌞 Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard for sun protection.

  • 🐢 Respect wildlife: always keep a safe distance and never touch the animals.
