Isla Isabela, Galápagos: The Travel Guide
Isla Isabela is animal paradise
The Galápagos Islands in Ecuador are one of the best places on earth to see wildlife up close in its natural environment. No matter where you go, animals are everywhere – from sea lions on the beach to giant tortoises in the highlands.
During our island-hopping trip across the Galápagos, we started on Santa Cruz, the central island and main hub. From there, our next stop was the largest island in the archipelago: Isla Isabela.
How to Get to Isla Isabela
The journey to Isla Isabela is already an adventure:
First, fly from mainland Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) to Baltra Island.
Travel by bus and boat to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz.
From Puerto Ayora, take a ferry (about 2–3 hours) to Isabela’s main town, Puerto Villamil.
We explored Santa Cruz first, then hopped on the ferry to Isla Isabela, before later continuing to San Cristóbal.
Best Things to Do on Isla Isabela
Isla Isabela is known for its volcanic landscapes, remote vibe, and amazing wildlife encounters. Here are the highlights you can’t miss:
Snorkel at Los Túneles
On our tour, we visited Los Túneles, one of the most famous snorkeling and diving sites in the Galápagos. The crystal-clear waters and volcanic rock arches are home to an incredible variety of wildlife: white-tip reef sharks, rays, sea turtles, penguins, and blue-footed boobies.
Flamingo Lagoon
Just outside Puerto Villamil, you’ll find lagoons filled with pink flamingos – a beautiful and peaceful spot for a walk.
Concha de Perla
This calm bay is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Here you can snorkel with playful sea lions, marine iguanas, and even the occasional penguin.
Explore the Volcanic Landscapes
Isabela is the largest island in the Galápagos and home to five active volcanoes. You can take a hike to Sierra Negra, one of the world’s largest volcanic craters, for epic views.
Giant Tortoise Breeding Center
Learn about conservation efforts and see giant tortoises up close at the Centro de Crianza Arnaldo Tupiza in Puerto Villamil.
