Ha Long Bay Cruise: How To Avoid The Crowds

Ha Long Bay: Kayaking, Karst Mountains, and the Legend of the Dragon

Are you ready for one of the seven wonders of nature? Ha Long Bay is undoubtedly Vietnam’s most iconic destination. With over 3,000 limestone islands rising from the emerald waters, it’s a bucket-list spot for every traveler. But how do you visit this wonder in 2026 while avoiding the crowds? We’ve got you covered! This is the perfect guide to avoid the crowds during a Ha Long Bay cruise.

The Legend of the Diving Dragon

The name “Ha Long” translates to ‘Bay of the Descending Dragon.’ Legend has it that a dragon created the bay by carving out valleys with its tail as it dove into the sea. Consequently, the area filled with water, leaving only the peaks visible. While it’s just a myth, the atmosphere among the towering rocks truly feels legendary.

Our Strategy: Avoiding the Crowds via Cat Ba Island

Ha Long Bay is the most popular spot in Vietnam, which is why we chose a different approach. First, we traveled from Hanoi to Cat Ba Island. Not only is the island beautiful itself, but it also serves as the gateway to the quieter Lan Ha Bay. We booked a 3-day, 2-night tour with this company to ensure we stayed away from the tourist masses during our Ha Long Bay Cruise.

Top Activities in Ha Long Bay

Our days on the boat and the island were packed with adventure:

  • Kayaking through Gorges: This is a true bucket-list experience. We didn’t just sail between the rocks; we paddled straight through them into hidden lagoons.

  • Boat Jumping & Sunset Parties: There is nothing quite like jumping off the top deck into the bay. Afterward, we enjoyed a spectacular sunset with a drink in hand.

  • Cycling on Cat Ba: We picked up bikes for a 2-hour tour towards Viet Hai, a tiny village of only 80 houses. Moreover, we even enjoyed a traditional “doctor fish” massage!

  • Cooking Class: On the boat, we learned how to make authentic Vietnamese rice paper spring rolls. Finally, we got to eat our own creations!

Staying at a Local Homestay

Although sleeping on the boat was amazing, our second night at Lan Homestay in the mountains of Cat Ba was the real highlight. Staying with a local family allowed us to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. In short, it was the perfect way to end our Ha Long adventure.

Wout of the World Travel Tips for Ha Long Bay (2026)

Planning your trip to Ha Long Bay in 2026? Use these practical tips to maximize your adventure and avoid the most common tourist traps:

  • Choose the Lan Ha Bay route: Although most boats depart from Ha Long Harbor, you are better off traveling via Cat Ba Island. The surrounding Lan Ha Bay is just as stunning, but you’ll share the water with significantly fewer cruise ships.

  • Book at least 3 days (2 nights): Many travelers make the mistake of booking a day trip or just a single night. Not only will you spend too much time in transit, but you also miss the chance to venture deep into the archipelago to spots like the remote Viet Hai village.

  • Best time to visit: For the best weather (blue skies and pleasant temperatures), aim for March, April, October, or November. Consequently, you avoid the typhoon season (July–August), when boats are often forced to stay at the docks.

  • Bring a dry bag: You will definitely go kayaking! To keep your camera and phone safe while paddling through caves and lagoons, a waterproof bag is essential.

  • Visa requirements: Don’t forget that for Vietnam in 2026, you still need an E-visa. Arrange this online at least a week in advance to avoid any stress at the border.
