The travel guide to Gili Islands

Gili Islands – The Tropical Paradise of Lombok, Indonesia

Just off the northwest coast of Lombok, the Gili Islands are three tiny tropical gems surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water, white sandy beaches, and some of the best snorkeling spots in Indonesia. During our island-hopping trip from Bali, we spent a few days exploring all three Gilis: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air — each with its own unique charm.

Gili Trawangan – The Lively Yet Laid-Back Island

We chose to stay on Gili Trawangan, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. This is the liveliest island, packed with great restaurants, beach bars, dive shops, and boutique stays. Yet despite its energy, it never feels overwhelming.

You can spot sea turtles just by stepping into the water, cycle around the island in under an hour, or watch the sunset from one of the cozy beach bars. There are no cars or motorbikes here — only bicycles and horse carts — giving it that peaceful island vibe that makes you instantly slow down.

Accommodation tip: We stayed at Villa Rika, a charming place surrounded by palm trees and just a short walk from the beach.

Gili Meno – The Quiet Escape

A short boat ride away lies Gili Meno, the smallest and quietest of the three. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, this is the place to be. The beaches here are pristine, and the crystal-clear waters are perfect for snorkeling — with a good chance of seeing turtles and colorful tropical fish.

We loved the calm atmosphere and untouched nature. With fewer visitors, you’ll find plenty of space to yourself — ideal for couples or travelers seeking tranquility and natural beauty.

Gili Air – The Best of Both Worlds

Gili Air combines the relaxed local feel of Meno with the liveliness of Trawangan. It’s easily reached by a short boat ride and offers a slower pace of life, perfect for those wanting a balance of comfort and authenticity.

The snorkeling here is incredible, with vibrant coral gardens and turtles just steps from shore. You’ll also find cozy restaurants and beach bars — the perfect spots to sip a cold drink while watching the sun melt into the ocean. Cycling or walking around the island gives you the full taste of authentic island life without the crowds.

Our Experience

In about three hours from Bali, we arrived in paradise — turquoise water, coral reefs, and smiling locals welcoming us with “hello” and coconuts. We snorkeled with turtles, flew the drone for incredible aerial views, and captured every moment for our video travel guide.

Whether you’re looking for diving, snorkeling, cycling, or simply relaxing under a palm tree, the Gili Islands of Lombok are an unmissable stop on any Indonesia itinerary.
