Fairytale trip through Morocco

Our Morocco Travel Route – The Ultimate Highlights Roadtrip

Planning a Morocco itinerary?
This complete route takes you through the very best places to visit in Morocco: blue cities, ancient medinas, powerful waterfalls, the endless Sahara and the relaxed Atlantic coast. Morocco is a country full of contrasts, and this journey shows exactly why it’s one of the most exciting destinations in North Africa.

Whether you’re backpacking or traveling comfortably with a suitcase (like we did!), this route gives you a perfect mix of culture, nature, history and adventure.

Starting the Journey: From Spain to Tangier

We began our trip by flying to Málaga in Southern Spain and taking the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar to Tangier. It’s an easy and unique way to enter Morocco, and the perfect start to a diverse road trip.

Tangier – The Gateway to Morocco

Tangier is where Europe and Africa meet. It’s a vibrant coastal city with a lively medina, street cafés, viewpoints and a modern waterfront. The mix of cultures makes Tangier an exciting first stop on your Morocco route.

Highlights in Tangier:

  • Kasbah Museum

  • Tangier Medina

  • Cap Spartel & the Caves of Hercules

Chefchaouen – The Famous Blue City

Next, we traveled to Chefchaouen, one of the most iconic and photogenic places in Morocco. The entire medina is painted in shades of blue, making every corner feel dreamy and magical.

Why visit Chefchaouen:

  • Endless blue streets and alleys

  • Peaceful mountain setting

  • Great local food and artisan products

Akchour Waterfalls – A Hidden Natural Paradise

Just outside Chefchaouen you’ll find the Akchour Waterfalls, a turquoise oasis surrounded by dramatic rock formations. It’s a perfect day trip for nature lovers.

You can hike to:

  • The Small Waterfall

  • The Big Waterfall

  • The “God’s Bridge” rock arch

Fes – The Cultural Heart of Morocco

Fes is home to one of the world’s oldest medinas, with more than 9,000 narrow streets. It’s chaotic, historic, and incredibly fascinating — a must on any Morocco travel route.

Don’t miss in Fes:

  • Chouara Tannery

  • Al-Qarawiyyin University

  • The old medina (Fes el-Bali)

Meknes – An Imperial City with Local Charm

Often overlooked, Meknes is quieter and more relaxed than Fes, but just as impressive. Its monumental gates, palaces and vast squares show Morocco’s imperial past.

Rabat – Morocco’s Relaxed Capital

Rabat has a calm, coastal atmosphere and beautiful architecture. It’s clean, peaceful and ideal for travelers who want a break from the busy medinas.

Top sights:

  • Hassan Tower

  • Chellah

  • Kasbah of the Udayas

Casablanca – Modern Morocco

Casablanca is the country’s economic center and shows Morocco’s modern side. The main attraction is the spectacular Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world.

Marrakech – The City of Colors

Marrakech is vibrant, energetic and full of life. From rooftop cafés to spice markets, this city overwhelms the senses in the best way possible.

Must-see attractions:

  • Jemaa el-Fna square

  • Bahia Palace

  • Jardin Majorelle & Yves Saint Laurent Museum

Ouzoud Waterfalls – Morocco’s Tallest Falls

A few hours from Marrakech, the Ouzoud Waterfalls are a spectacular natural attraction where you’ll find rainbow mists, monkeys and refreshing natural pools.

Through the Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate

Crossing the High Atlas Mountains is an adventure in itself. Eventually you arrive in Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” because many famous movies were filmed here.

Ait Benhaddou – UNESCO Desert Fortress

This ancient clay ksar looks like a movie set — and it actually is. Ait Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s most beautiful historic sites, especially at sunset.

Merzouga & the Erg Chebbi Dunes – Gateway to the Sahara

From here, the landscape turns golden and endless. In Merzouga, we rode camels through the Erg Chebbi dunes and spent a night under the stars in a desert camp — one of the highlights of the entire trip.

Taghazout – Surfing & Chill Vibes

Back at the coast, we stopped in Taghazout, Morocco’s most famous surf village. It’s relaxed, sunny and the perfect place to unwind after days on the road.

Essaouira – A Charming Medieval Port City

Essaouira is a beautiful white-and-blue town with a creative atmosphere. Think artisan shops, seafront walls, good seafood and strong Atlantic winds.

Agadir – Beach Time to End the Trip

We ended our Morocco itinerary in Agadir, a coastal hub with long beaches, modern hotels and a relaxed vibe. A great place to rest after an adventure-packed trip.
