Denmark, WA: Exploring Australia's Most Magical Coastline
Following our exploration of Albany’s dramatic coastal cliffs, our South Coast road trip continued west toward one of Western Australia’s most charming holiday destinations: Denmark.
Home to around 5,000 residents, this peaceful coastal town was named in 1826 by British explorer Thomas Braidwood Wilson after his colleague Alexander Denmark. Don’t let its small size fool you—Denmark WA is packed with natural wonders, ancient forests, turquoise swimming lagoons, and world-class wineries.
Here is our ultimate guide to the best things to do in Denmark Western Australia, complete with top sights, camping tips, and hidden gems!
📍 Quick Guide: Denmark WA Highlights You Can't Miss
Short on time during your South West Coast road trip? Be sure to include these top attractions in your Denmark itinerary:
🟢 Greens Pool: A sheltered natural ocean pool in William Bay National Park, famous for its calm turquoise waters and giant granite boulders.
🐘 Elephant Rocks: A short coastal walk from Greens Pool leads to massive boulders that resemble a herd of elephants wading in the sea.
🍷 Singlefile Winery: Taste award-winning cool-climate wines and gourmet cheese platters set within a fairy-tale estate.
🏄♂️ Ocean Beach & Wilson Inlet: Marvel at the swirly contrast of blue and white waters where the inlet meets the Southern Ocean.
⛺ Camp Kennedy (Perkins Beach): A serene, hidden camping spot near a completely empty beach located between Albany and Denmark.

⛺ Camping in Nature: Camp Kennedy & Perkins Beach
En route to Denmark, we stumbled upon a peaceful campsite when places closer to town were fully booked: Camp Kennedy. Situated midway between Albany and Denmark, this property serves as a Christian youth camp but opens its doors to independent travelers.
For a very affordable rate, you can camp right in nature with great facilities, including a fully equipped camp kitchen and high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi.
Best of all, a 30-meter walk from the campsite leads directly to Perkins Beach—a pristine, empty stretch of white sand overlooking the ocean. Finding completely deserted beaches like this is what makes traveling Western Australia so special!
🌿 William Bay National Park: Natural Wonders
The headline attraction of Denmark WA is undoubtedly William Bay National Park, home to two iconic coastal landmarks located side by side:
1. Greens Pool
Greens Pool is celebrated worldwide for its clear, emerald-green waters protected by a line of massive offshore granite boulders. Because the rocks block the heavy ocean swells, the water inside remains calm and flat. It acts as a natural swimming pool, making it an ideal spot for families to swim and snorkel safely.
2. Elephant Rocks
A short walk over the headland brings you to Elephant Rocks. Viewed from the overlooking platform or the sandy cove below, these huge, rounded granite formations striking resemblance to a herd of elephants chilling in the shallow ocean.
🍷 Wine Tasting at Singlefile Winery
Western Australia boasts 20 distinct wine regions and over 400 wineries. Denmark is renowned for its boutique vineyards producing exceptional cool-climate varietals. To celebrate Suus’ 35th birthday, we stopped by Singlefile Winery.
The estate feels like a fairytale, complete with manicured gardens and resident geese. The staff welcomed us warmly for a relaxed wine tasting featuring sparkling, white, and red wines paired with complimentary cheese and crackers. It was an unforgettable birthday stop, and we made sure to purchase a couple of our favorite bottles to enjoy later at camp!
🌊 Ocean Beach & Wilson Inlet Panorama
Back on the coast, head south of Denmark town to Ocean Beach. Popular among local surfers and swimmers, this beach offers a dramatic lookout where the Wilson Inlet empties into the sea.
The swirling patterns formed by the dark tea-tree water mixing with the bright blue Southern Ocean resemble the famous Hill Inlet on Australia’s east coast. It easily ranks as one of the most striking panoramic coastal views along the entire southern coast!
💡 Dining Tip: Denmark is a quiet town where most restaurants close on Monday nights. If you arrive on a Monday, plan ahead or grab a takeout pizza!
