How to Get to Chiang Dao
Chiang Dao is perfectly situated in Northern Thailand, making it an easy addition to any northern itinerary.
From Chiang Mai:
Approximately 72 km (45 miles) north — about a 1.5-hour drive via Highway 107. You can easily get there by rental car, scooter, local yellow songthaew, or a private taxi.From Chiang Rai: Approximately 150 km (93 miles) southwest — about a 2.5 to 3-hour scenic drive through the mountains.
How to Combine Chiang Dao in Your Itinerary
Chiang Dao sits right along the main northern route between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Instead of taking the standard highway loop, driving through Chiang Dao allows you to break up the journey, stop for coffee at scenic mountain viewpoints like Ban Lung Ma, and experience Thailand’s tranquil countryside before heading on to Chiang Rai or cross the border into Laos.

Where to stay in Chiang Dao
During our time in Chiang Dao, we stayed at a charming local homestay called Dream Home. Nestled right in the countryside, it offers private cozy cabins surrounded by giant limestone mountains. It’s run by an incredibly warm and welcoming local family. Sitting on your private terrace right in the middle of nature, watching the mist roll over the peaks, is completely free—and truly feels like being on cloud nine.
Top Highlight: Wat Tham Chiang Dao (Chiang Dao Cave Temple)
The main draw for the few travelers who make it to Chiang Dao is the Wat Tham Chiang Dao Temple Complex. Caves are considered deeply holy sites in Thailand, as local traditions hold that ancient spirits inhabit them, and Buddhist monks historically used them for shelter.
The Gardens: Before even entering the cave, the surrounding temple grounds feel like a quiet Garden of Eden, complete with golden shrines, lush foliage, and ponds filled with colorful fish and turtles.
Inside the Caves: The complex contains over 100 caves, five of which are open to the public. The main cavern features altars, ancient statues, and stalactites dating back to the Lanna era (14th century).

To explore the darker, unlit sections of the cave system, you can hire a local guide with a traditional gas lantern for 200 THB (approx. $5.75 / €5.20) per group.Fish & Turtle Pond:
Access to the scenic outer gardens, ponds, and temple grounds is included with your main entry ticket. Feeding the fish costs a small donation of 10–20 THB for a bag of food.
Spotting Doi Luang Chiang Dao
On clear evenings, as the sky turns into a sunset painting, you can catch a full view of Doi Luang Chiang Dao. Standing at 2,225 meters, it is the third-highest peak in Thailand and dominates the skyline above the valley.

Essential Practical Tips for Visiting Chiang Dao
Dress Code at the Temple:
Because Wat Tham Chiang Dao is an active place of worship, make sure your shoulders and knees are covered before entering the temple complex.Cave Lighting & Guides:
The two main cavern routes are fully illuminated, but if you want to explore the deeper, unlit caves, local guides are available at the entrance with gas lanterns for a small fee.Footwear Matters:
Wear sturdy shoes or sandals with good grip. The stone paths inside the cave can get wet, slippery, and uneven in certain sections.Cash is King:
ATMs are scarce around the mountain areas and small homestays. Bring enough Thai Baht in cash for entrance fees, local meals, and transport.Best Time to Visit:
