The Nature Wonder of Australia: The Bungle Bungles
Into the Heart of the Kimberley: The Magic of the Bungle Bungles
After our rugged start on the Gibb River Road, it was time for one of Australia’s most spectacular landmarks: Purnululu National Park, better known as the Bungle Bungles. These 20-million-year-old, beehive-shaped sandstone domes are a UNESCO World Heritage site and a true wonder of nature.
The Journey: Not for the Faint-Hearted
Getting to the Bungle Bungles is an adventure in itself. Before leaving civilization at Halls Creek, we made sure to fill up our tank—300 km without a gas station is no joke in the Outback!
From the highway, it’s another two-hour drive on an unsealed road. Once again, we lowered our tire pressure to 30 PSI to tackle the corrugations, mud, and river crossings. It’s a challenging route, but the views of the red landscape make every bump worth it.
Stop 1: Cathedral Gorge – Nature’s Amphitheater
One of the most spiritual places in the park is Cathedral Gorge.
The Experience: Walking between the massive cliffs, you eventually reach a natural amphitheater. The scale is hard to describe—the walls tower above you, and the acoustics are incredible.
Wout of the World Tip: If you’re lucky, you’ll have the place to yourself. Hearing your own voice echo in that silence is something you’ll never forget.
Stop 2: The Domes & Piccaninny Creek
The “beehive” domes are the icons of the park. The orange and dark gray stripes are caused by different layers of sandstone and cyanobacteria. We took the Domes Walk, which feels like walking through a prehistoric city where the buildings are made of rock. Even in the dry season, when Piccaninny Creek is bone dry, the landscape looks like another planet.
Stop 3: Echidna Chasm – A Wall of Fire
In the northern part of the park lies Echidna Chasm, named after the local spiky anteater.
The Magic Moment: This narrow gap in the rocks is spectacular at any time, but around 11:00 AM (in July), the sun shines directly into the chasm. The dark red walls suddenly light up like they are on fire. It is a breathtaking sight that only lasts a short while!
Practical Tips (2026 Edition)
Fuel up: Halls Creek is your last chance for gas and coffee before heading into the park.
Beat the heat: By noon, it gets scorching. Do your hikes early in the morning and spend the afternoon “chillaxing” with a cold drink at the campsite.
Cold nights: Don’t be fooled by the daytime heat; the desert gets freezing at night. Bring sweaters and plenty of blankets!
Travel with kids: We used a carrier for Céline and the walks were very doable for Jens. It’s a great destination for adventurous families.
