Anuradhapura: Guide to Sri Lanka’s First Ancient Capital
Our journey through Sri Lanka has been an absolute whirlwind of incredible moments! Established in the 4th century BC, this UNESCO World Heritage site is packed with thousands of years of ancient history, sacred stupas, and peaceful rock temples. Unlike many historic sites, Anuradhapura is a living, breathing place of pilgrimage where locals come to pray every single day.

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi (The World’s Oldest Tree): Planted in 288 BC, this sacred fig tree is officially the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date. It’s an incredible experience watching pilgrims gather here to offer flowers and pray.
Ruwanwelisaya Stupa & Morning Ceremony: A breathtaking, pure-white stupa housing sacred Buddha relics. We arrived just in time for the morning Panchaturya ceremony—a traditional performance using five instruments to drive away negativity.
Jetavanaramaya Stupa: Built with an estimated 19 million bricks, this is the largest stupa in the world! We had the entire grounds to ourselves, accompanied only by a group of friendly gray langur monkeys.
Isurumuniya Rock Temple (Our Favorite Stop!): Visited on our final morning, this ancient rock monastery nestled beside a pond felt like stepping straight into Tibet. Make sure to climb the rocks for ancient carvings and panoramic views.
Flying Foxes at Tissa Lake: Our tuk-tuk driver showed us a secret spot near Tissa Lake where thousands of giant flying foxes (fruit bats) hang in the trees.

Entrance Fees & Best Times to Visit
To ensure a smooth day exploring Anuradhapura, here is everything you need to know about tickets, timing, and temple etiquette:
Entrance Fees:
Sacred City Main Ticket: A full-day pass for the primary archaeological area costs $30 USD per person (payable in LKR at current rates). You can purchase this at the Archeology Museum, which gives access to major stupas like Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri.
Individual Sites: Certain places are managed separately. The Isurumuniya Rock Temple requires a small separate entrance fee of around 500 LKR ($1.50 USD) at the gate. Visiting the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree involves a small token contribution of about 200 LKR.
Best Times to Visit:
Early Morning (7:00 AM – 10:30 AM): The ideal window to explore. Temperatures are comfortable, the stone floors are cool enough to walk on, and you get to witness authentic morning prayer ceremonies.
Late Afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:30 PM): As the sun dips, the oppressive heat fades. Watching locals light oil lamps and incense around the glowing white stupas during golden hour is unforgettable.
Avoid Mid-Day (11:30 AM – 3:30 PM): Direct sunlight pushes temperatures above 35°C (95°F), making the bare-foot granite walks extremely uncomfortable.
Practical Info & Discount Deals
Shoe Storage: Dedicated shoe counters are available at temple entrances for a tiny fee, but carrying a lightweight drawstring bag in your daypack to carry your own shoes is much faster.
- Bring Thick Socks (The Ultimate Foot Saver!): You must take off your shoes at every temple. By mid-day, the stone floors absorb the scorching heat. At one point, I was literally sprinting across the courtyard because the ground was burning hot! Keeping a pair of thick socks in your daypack will save your feet.
Photo Etiquette: Never turn your back directly toward a statue of the Buddha for a photo, as it is considered deeply disrespectful in Theravada tradition. Always angle yourself slightly to the side.
Monkey Safety: While the local langurs and macaques make great camera subjects, keep snacks, bottled drinks, and loose items securely zipped inside your bag.
Dress Code: Keep your shoulders and knees covered at all sacred sites. Wearing white clothing is a tradition among locals, so it’s a great way to show respect.

Best Time to Visit & Combining Anuradhapura in Your Itinerary
Best Time to Visit: Located in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, Anuradhapura is a great year-round destination. The driest and sunniest months run from January through September, with temperatures consistently around 30°C to 35°C (86°F–95°F). The main rainy season occurs between October and December (Maha Monsoon), though showers are usually short and tropical.

Wilpattu National Park (approx. 1 hour / 45 km): Sri Lanka’s largest national park, famous for leopard spottings and far less crowded than Yala.
Sigiriya & Dambulla (approx. 1.5 hours / 75 km): Head south to climb the world-famous Lion Rock or explore the ancient Dambulla Cave Temples.
